Villa Rosa: "Rocketship"

In celebration of Villa Rosa's opening spot for Ghostface Killah at the Cabooze tonight, the duo released a new track, the 4/20-inspired "Rocketship." The track creeps along with some reggae-inspired chord progressions and spacey synths, while Muja and Maria Isa swap verses. I.B.E: "AlwaysOnIt ft. Buda Tye & Muja Messiah" (Music Video)

"AlwaysOnIt" is the latest song from I.B.E's That Tape mixtape to get a music video release. The smoked out track features verses from Budah Tye and Muja Messiah, and was produced by Bobby Raps. The video was directed by the multitalented Greg Grease, whose work has been popping up regularly lately.

New visuals from Villa Rosa, "Chico" features a guest spot from I Self Devine. The video was directed by Greg Grease. Blue Diamond Island is available now.

Big Jess: "Get It In ft. Mally & Muja Messiah"

Interesting news from Big Jess of Unknown Prophets. He just announced the upcoming release of his fourth solo album titled Self Therapy, due out sometime in the Spring. "Get It In" features two of the best rappers in the Twin Cities recently, Mally and Muja Messiah, and is the lead single from that album. Jess also confirmed that Unknown Prophets are working on the follow up to their album World Premier, titled WP2.

He really thrives within the loose confines of mixtapes, given free reign to rap about whatever the hell he wants and have fun doing it. This track was a highlight, especially with P.O.S. spazzing on the guest verse.

As always, Muja brings that gully yet technical street rap to a local scene that largely lacks in that domain. I'm in the crowd somewhere there watching A.R.M. tear it down with this guest-heavy track on Two Africans and a Jew. Let's be honest, though, wasn't Budo one of the best surprises of the entire day? That man was killing it on the guitar and horns with Grieves and A.R.M.

I somewhat sarcastically quipped about not hearing anything from Muja a while back, and naturally Jon Jon at Sound Verite caught notice. As expected, he promptly hit me with some new material from one of MPLS' finest, but I have been a little delayed in posting it. This track appeared on Peter Parker's recent Grind Season Go Getters, Vol. 1 mixtape which was hosted by J. Cole and featured several artists including A.R.M., Sims, and Prof.

Empty was able to record a few songs at Muja Messiah's recent show at the Triple Rock. I haven't had much from Muja to post on Midwest Broadcast lately, but from my understanding he's working on the follow up to 2008's The Adventures of a B-Boy/D-Boy. Rhymesayers Hatit Benefit at First Ave (Video)

I don't know who Mr. 83 is, but he was able to capture some assorted moments from the Rhymesayers-presented Haiti fundraiser concert the other night. Looks like it was an absolutely tremendous event. A couple cool moments: 1) St. Paul Slim and Toki Wright remixing "The Freshest Kids." That song came on my iPod the other day, and I was hoping it wouldn't just up and die now that Ali's tour is over. 2) I Self Devine performing. I've been waiting for a new I Self album for some time now.

Twin Town Titans: 2007 J Dilla Tribute (Video)

As many of you may know, J Dilla's was born on February 7, 1974, and tragically passed away on February 10, 2006. To celebrate his life, several rap blogs have been posting remix projects, favorite Dilla beats, and tribute videos to honor to legendary producer. Similarly, Tru Ruts just released a fascinating video featuring numerous Twin Cities artists, unofficially dubbed the "Twin Town Titans." The description of this event is a bit of a mouthful, so I will borrow the words of our friends at Tru Ruts:

In 2007, Tru Ruts brought together 9 of the top emcees in the Twin Cities, unofficially dubbed the 'Twin Town Titans', to pay tribute to the great J Dilla. This was the first time that this many of the Twin Cities best emcees had all shared the stage together, representing not only the foundation builders of Minnesota hip hop, but also some of its rising stars. Backed by the Leroy Smokes band, along with singers Anika and Pavielle, each of the emcess dropped a verse in honor of Dilla. The emcees included Slug (of Atmosphere/Rhymesayers), Truthmaze (Tru Ruts), Muja Messiah (Black Corners), Maria Isa (Sota Rico), OSP, Buss One (Leroy Smokes), Nena (of Heat), Mazta I and St. Paul Slim (of Guardian of Balance and Stophouse). The tribute was organized and produced by e.g. bailey (Tru Ruts). The filming as organized by Damian Kussian. The performance opened for the Slum Village concert at Trocaderos on July 11th, 2007.
