Joell Ortiz: "Can't You Tell" / "Ghetto"
A double dose of Ortiz might make this bitter Monday morning a little nicer. I don't know about you, but I think his verse on "Ghetto" is one of the better ones of the year. He absolutely murders it start to finish.

J.Loonz: "Capital Punishment" + "What It Feels Like" + "I Missed You"
So our boy J.Loonz, as you may or may not know, if chillin' in Prague at the moment for a little study abroad trip. And I know you've all been waiting on the official release of the Nerd-Hop mixtape. Let me tell you, it's going to be worth the wait. Everyone is just tryin' to get their act together, fixing and tweaking the tracks, so when it's time to unleash Nerd-Hop for ya'll, you're getting the best product possible. And, not to get you excited or anything, but it might be coming sooner than you think.
But for now, let it be know that J.Loonz is a hustler. This man found studios in Germany and Prague to put down tracks. So between the women, whiskey, and weed (and beer, you know there's plenty of beer in Prague), J.Loonz has been writing songs and putting down new material. It seems he also found some dude named JX Caliber, who I honestly don't know much about because communication with Loonz is limited right now. But they're gettin' it in right now. Why don't you enjoy these tracks for the weekend. I don't know why they're in .wav format, but they still play. Maybe that's what they use over in the Eastern Block.
As for me? I'm heading to Michigan this weekend to watch the UW Badgers take care of business against the Maize and Blue. I'll be back on Sunday. Peace.

Twins 7, White Sox 6

That was easily one of the best baseball games I've seen in a while. Twins looked down for the count once Slowey got injured and gave up all those runs in the 4th. But in typical Minnesota fashion, they started grinding away, one run at a time. Great victory, couldn't be more proud of my Twinkies. Huge games from everyone, now we just gotta close out against Kansas City!

Johnson & Jonson: Johnson & Jonson (Album Review)

Judging by his work ethic, it might be safe to assume the Blu suffers from insomnia. The California emcee indisputably stole the show in 2007 by pairing with DJ Exile for his instant-classic album, Below The Heavens. Next, in April of 2008, he teamed up with Detroit emcee/producer Ta’Raach, to put out a raw, unpolished collaboration titled The Piece Talks under the group name CRAC Knuckles. Now, he has released yet another album, this time with Mainframe, a lesser known, yet considerably skillful producer. The duo, known together as Johnson & Jonson, put their significant chemistry on display for their self-titled debut album.
The album launches with “J & J,” an intro track focused over a dirty, rock-infused beat that starkly contrasts with what Blu’s followers are familiar to. Following tracks, such as “Up All Night,” and “Half A Knot,” capture Blu’s ability to incorporate the stream of consciousness style of rapping that has become popular of late. However, instead of endlessly stringing off irrelevant punchlines and metaphors, Blu’s raps tend to come full circle, making listening to his verses much more gratifying.
Still, Mainframe’s contributions to Johnson & Jonson cannot be overlooked. Whereas DJ Exile focused mainly on soulful sampling on Below The Heavens and Ta’Raach’s simplistic boom-bap dominated The Piece Talks, Mainframe sustains an impressive versatility throughout all of Johnson & Jonson that allows for an entertaining listen. Whether it be the jazzy horns on “Mama Told Me,” the vocal sampling on “The Only Way,” or the sultry bass and acoustic guitar on “Hold On John,” Mainframe’s production always has room to breathe and shine to a level equal that of Blu’s lyrics.
Johnson & Jonson was reportedly supposed to premiere with Below The Heavens as a promotional mixtape. This is apparent, as many tracks clock in at around two minutes, featuring no hooks or breaks – just Blu abusing the instrumental until the song ends. This lack of format does fit Blu’s lyrical style appropriately at times. Take the spectacular track “The Only Way,” on which Blu raps coherently along with the vocal samples about the struggles of trying to deal with what life can throw at you.
With Blu taking part in so many projects in the past year, it is hard not to let his projects fall victim to comparison. This album is too loose to land on the same pedestal as Below The Heavens. This is due in part to the short song lengths and Blu’s flows being more nonspecific, as opposed to his brilliant storytelling on Below The Heavens. But in comparison to The Piece Talks, on which Blu outshined Ta’Raach, Johnson & Jonson serves as a more agreeable listen because of Mainframe’s elevated, flexible production.
One will inevitably wonder what Blu is going to be up to next. Likely, he’ll be up in to the late hours of the night, grinding away on his next project or concept. But until then, it is comforting to know he left us with a sublime release to keep everyone satisfied. Johnson & Jonson succeeds as a rather comprehensive hip-hop album, complete with both solid beats and rhymes.

Termanology: "So Amazing" (Video)
This is the new video from Termanology, off of his upcoming album, Politics as Usual, which is dropping on September 30 (One of the craziest days for hip-hop releases in the past couple years). Seriously, with the production lineup Term got for this album, it better be amazing. I'm just hoping the plethora of guest verses doesn't water down the LP.

Atmosphere: "You" & "Yesterday" (Live on Jimmy Kimmel)
Atmosphere continues dominating the late night talk show performance circuit, as they stop by Jimmy Kimmel to perform the opening chorus to "You," and then transition into one of my favorite songs off of When Life Give You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. "Yesterday" is such a beautiful song, and Slug definitely does it justice on this performance. Atmosphere are coming to perform here in Madison, WI on Halloween night, which is sure to be crazy. I'll most definitely have some footage of that one for you all. Plus I've been in talks with the higher ups at Rhymesayers, and I should be doing an interview with Slug and Ant around that time, as well. So keep checking back for more exclusives!

I was gonna write up a post about Common Market's debut, self-titled album, as a new entry in Midwest Broadcast's Slept On Albums, but I guess now that I've got this new video to post, I'll have to find another gem for all six of you that check this website (what up!?). You can get the album on your own. You can also get Common Market's latest album, Tobacco Road, which dropped a couple weeks back and is pretty dope. You know Sabzi (of Blue Scholars, as well) is always killing it with those beats. The organ on this track is crazy! So here you go, peep this ill video for "Trouble Is," a lead single off Tobacco Road, and keep checking back for my album review!

Heltah Skeltah: "D.I.R.T."

You may or may not have heard of Heltah Skeltah before this post. To make things short, it's a rap duo consisting of Rock & Ruck (aka Sean Price), who are part of underground hip-hop supergroup Boot Camp Clik. They released two albums in the mid-late nineties, and have kind of gone under the radar until lately. Now they're preparing to release their next effort, D.I.R.T. (Da Incredible Rap Team) in exactly one week on Duck Down Records.
If you do know Heltah Skeltah, you probably skipped that first section, and have already downloaded this track, "D.I.R.T. (Another Boot Camp Clik YEAH Song)." And you better buy the album when it drops on September 30! Trust me, I just got my copy in the mail yesterday and it is absolutely killer.

If this album is not on your radar, please do some research immediately. Madlib's highly anticipated WLIB: King Of The Wigflip is coming out in exactly one week, on Sept. 30. It's gonna have appearances by Talib Kweli, Guilty Simpson, Prince Po, and many many more. Madib is an absolute beast on the boards, and if you don't know, go check this track out.
Update: The link I uploaded died so I just snatched this one from 2DB.

Bonus: Hopefully you checked the track out and saw Madlib and Talib's amazing chemistry with eachother. As a little extra treat, in case you aren't aware, the two actually put out an album together a little while back called Liberation. It's truly a spectacular album, and features one of my favorite Talib songs of all time, "Over The Counter," available on the imeem player below.

Black Milk: "Give The Drummer Sum"
I posted this video of Black Milk working in the studio for his single off the upcoming TRONIC, it's called "Give The Drummer Sum." Aptly titled, it might take a couple of bars for you to catch on to the beat for this song, but the drums are absolutely INSANE. Black Milk is one of the more innovative producers doing it right now. Enjoy, as there will be more goodies from TRONIC coming soon. And get the album when it comes out on October 28.

Fashawn: One Shot One Kill (Mixtape)

Fresno, CA emcee Fashawn, just dropped his new mixtape, One Shot One Kill, hosted by those two dudes Mick Boogie & Terry Urban, perhaps you've heard of them. Fashawn kind of falls into that group of up and coming Cali emcees, with Blu, U-N-I, & TiRon. In fact, Thurzday of U-N-I is even features on this mixtape, along with Evidence and Planet Asia. Damn. This kid is seriously talented; if you need further evidence, I uploaded one track of the mixtape, "F.A.S.H.A.W.N.," on which he goes on an impressive alphabet tutorial (You'll see what I mean). If you like what you hear, go ahead and get the entire mixtape. I recommend it. For the music, of course, not the gun clapping references in the title.

So the Solillaquists of Sound just released a new track featuring Ma Dukes (apparently J Dilla's mother), J-Live, and Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5). However, all proceeds to go Mrs. Yancey herself, to support her in her time of need. Follow the link if you're interested in the new track/supporting a good cause.

Trey Songz: "Paper Planes"

Trey Songz just dropped his own little remixed version of M.I.A.'s infectious track "Paper Planes." We've now seen everyone from Muja to Freeway to (just now) the R&B crooner Mr. Songz bless this instrumental with their own steez. Naturally, I was prone to skipping over this, when I peeped it at The FADER, but I gave it a listen and was pleasently surprised. The only thing I don't understand is how Kala came out in August of 2007, and only now people are jumping on this one. Whatever.

Madison's SoCo Music Experience: The Roots & GZA
So I hit up the surprisingly dope music festival hosted by Southern Comfort yesterday in Madison. First off - it was free. Always a plus. Second, GZA and The Roots were playing. I don't know how much else really needs to be said, but I have some video/photos I'll throw up for you here. GZA's show was pretty dope, as he played almost all of Liquid Swords from start to finish. Then a few newer tracks off his recent Pro Tools album, as well. Then, on a side note, the blues-rock group The Black Keys performed between GZA and The Roots, and they fucking killed it. If you ever have a chance to see them, I suggest you do so. Not much to their music: nasty guitar riffs and pounding drums. But it was awesome. But what pretty much everyone came for was The Roots. They definitely did not disappoint. This being my first time seeing them, I was very pleased. Their set was about an hour and fifteen minutes long, and they literally did not stop playing the entire time. It was basically a huge medley of Roots songs, dancing, tuba and guitar solos, cover tracks, and obviously ?uesto and Black Thought absolutely snapping off. The following footage may give you a good idea of what it was all about. All I know is I may have to venture to St. Paul in a couple weekends to see them play again at the McNally Smith River Rocks Festival on September 20.

eLZhi: The Preface (Album Review)

Since the late 1990s, eLZhi has been a monster in the Detroit hip-hop scene. With a slew of underground guest spots, mixtapes, and his work with the group Slum Village, eLZhi’s dues have officially been paid. Yet, outside of his home city, eLZhi’s solo career has not received the same level of attention that his skills merit. He seeks out to change that with his first proper solo album, The Preface.
eLZhi unabashedly lets it be known on the album’s opening track, “Intro (The Preface),” that he’s trying to show the people “what a classic is.” This bold claim may sound farfetched, but any skepticism should be quickly erased once eLZhi starts rapping. Even with only a twenty-second teaser verse on the intro track, eLZhi’s fierce delivery and intricate rhyme schemes should get listeners hitting rewind.
What really sets eLZhi apart from other emcees are his rhyme patterns. Embedded in many of his verses are seemingly unlimited internal rhymes that most rappers seldom use to the same effectiveness. And while it would take the average emcee weeks or months – if not forever – to create a similar rap, eLZhi makes it sound effortless. The only way to highlight eLZhi’s unparalleled ability is to highlight a section of his first verse of “Brag Swag,” as follows:
“The day that hell snowed is when eL fold, poetry’s well told / It’s entertaining, keep niggas training like the railroad / Stinging, what I bring in is dope as the kingpin / Slinging, OGs through me, beneath the wingspan / Expert, through the wet dirt, but still my tech squirt / Bucked, and niggas tucked in, just like a dress shirt / Been a beast in the winter fleece, come for your dinner feast / With the pen unleashed, I’m like a priest, with inner peace.”
The amazing thing is, though, that every song has lyrics on par with this. “Motown 25,” a rehashed track from his EuroPass mixtape, is an absolute lyrical onslaught, with eLZhi reciting the kind of clever punchlines that make you say to yourself in amazement, “Did he really just say that?”
One common worry about The Preface was that eLZhi was not going to have enough creative concept tracks. Rest assured that this problem is non-existent on The Preface. “Guessing Game” is one of the more innovative rap songs of the year, with eLZhi spitting incomplete lines, thus giving the listener a brief moment to guess how he will complete the previous line at the beginning of the next one. “Colors” features eLZhi rapping in the form of a teacher, instructing his students about color schemes. Though relatively elementary, the method which eLZhi goes about rapping the song helps it pose as interesting.
With fellow Detroit beatmaker Black Milk handling production on all but two of the tracks, The Preface makes for a very complete and consistent album. From start to finish, the album serves as a how-to manual for aspiring (as well as established) emcees. Since he has been rapping, eLZhi has known he is better than the vast majority of the rhymers out there, and with The Preface, he has proved it to everyone else.
