Back in January, local artists and activists came together to throw the first “Hip Hop Against Homophobia” show (pictures) at Minneapolis’ Nomad World Pub. The concert, which featured both queer and allied hip hop artists like Toki Wright, Maria Isa, Alicia Leafgreen, Kredentials and co-organizer Guante, packed the venue right away and succeeded in raising over a thousand dollars for three different LGBTQ-rights organizations.
This June, the organizers will be doing it again. The Bedlam Theater will host the next HHAH on June 13, a concert which will feature queer-hip hop trailblazers Johnny Dangerous and Tori Fixx, as well as local artists (queers and allies alike) the Bottom Feeders, See More Perspective, EZRA, Lindsey of 2Flytz Up, the Poetic Assassins and DJ Blowtorch. The show will raise money for three organizations: Color CoordiNATION, Reclaim and the GLBT Host Home Program.
On June 27, an all-ages HHAH will be held at the Depot in Hopkins featuring Guante & Big Cats!, Ill Chemistry, Phonetic One and Barton Stink. Proceeds from this show will benefit District 202, Minneapolis’ LGBTQ youth center.
“The first show exceeded all of our expectations,” co-organizer Guante says. “It felt good to see that many people so excited about this concept. This time, we’re having even more of a focus on education and action, with workshops and an ally-training leading up to the show. We’d like to see this as a model that other communities can use to collaborate.”
